Abstract: This paper presents a domain-independent method for the validation of approximate equilibrium models. The inputs to the method are an approximate model, a more accurate model, and tolerances on certain goal parameters. The method makes predictions based on the approximate model, and estimates the error in these predictions, with respect to the more accurate model. The approximate model is deemed to be adequate if and only if the estimated error in the goal parameters does not exceed the tolerance on them. We derive conditions under which the method is sound, i.e., conditions under which the estimated error is an upper bound on the actual error.
