Teaching, Consulting, and Misc. Academic Activities

I enjoy teaching and helping others very much and I received a certificate of distinction in teaching from the Stanford CS department. It is a shame (and one could go so far as to say problematic) that the compensation to effort ratio for teaching is so low in our society. Here is a list of courses that I've been involved in at Stanford as either an instructor or a teaching assistant:

In addition to my academic teaching, I've got 7 years of experience as a front lines computer consultant helping university faculty, staff, and both undergrads and grad students with computers and network related technologies. In addition to troubleshooting, this work presented very different kinds of teaching and education challenges. Most recently this was done as an RCC with Residential Computing at Stanford. I was a computer consultant all four years at Princeton in the Information Centers (ICs) of the Department of Computing and Information Technology (CIT).

During the 1998-1999 academic year I helped to run Stanford's Symbolic Systems Program, an interdisciplinary undergraduate major combining Computer Science, Linguistics, Philosophy, and Psychology, much like a cognitive science major but with more emphasis on computation and math-like formalism. (Stanford's SSP graduates often go into jobs in the high-tech industry. For example, both Excite and Trilogy were co-founded by Symbolic Systems graduates.)

I helped organize and run the first year of the CSLI Distinguished Lectures Series in Cognitive Science at Stanford during the 1998-1999 academic year.

For summer 1998, I worked at NASA Ames Research Center, in the Computational Sciences Division, in the Intelligent Collaboration and Assistant Systems (ICAS) Group, on a project involving Information Retrieval and collaborative information repositories.
